First Artificial Aortic Heart Valve

Riley, Karen. "FDA Approves First Artificial Aortic Heart Valve Placed without Open-heart Surgery." U.S. Food and Drug Administration. N.p., 2 Nov. 2011. Web. 2 Nov. 2011. <http://www.fda.gov/>.

New technology has come a long way for many generations, especially in the medical world. A new technology began in 2011 which has helped people who can not get a heart opening surgery. This technology is called “The Sapien Transcatheter Heart Valve. With the heart valve, doctors can now use this new and unique device that can help people undergo open heart surgery if and only if they want to take that option. The Sapien is made up of cow tissue and polyester that is strongly supported with a stainless steel mesh frame. The way this works can be a little complicated but easy at the same time. The Sapien THV is compressed in to the end of a long thin tube device called a delivery catheter. This catheter is inserted through an artery in the leg and maneuvered around to locate the diseased valve. After it has found it, the catheter is released and it’s expanded with a balloon, and it begins to function immediately. 365 patients have been treated with this technology, and only people who can’t undergo surgery. The process was approved by the FDA.

The Research was performed because researchers wanted to find a way patients who cannot undergo an open heart surgery, have the opportunity to still have an opportunity to get help with heart procedures in a safe manner.

The positive side of the Sapien THV it’s an alternative choice for patients who need to get a procedure for their heart, and it can help the health of a patient.

The negative aspect of this technology is that if the patient decides to go under the Sapien THV, it can cause a lot side effects include “ death, stroke, perforation of the blood vessels, ventricle or valvular structures, damage to the conduction system in the heart, significant bleeding, and leaks around the new valve.”

This source is mainly about the procedure of the heart valve. It breaks it down for you, so that the viewer can see how the process is. It shows 3 animations of the ways to do the procedure, and those are the Transfemoral Procedure Animation, Transapical Procedure Animation, and the Transaortic Procedure Animation.
