Gertrude!

Around the time of April 2012, I received my first livestock project, and it was a market pig. When I first got my pig, Gertrude, as I named her, I was in charge of taking care of it by fedding, cleaning, and making sure its health was fully positive. I learned something about agriculture and livestock production anddevelop an appreciation for the livestock industry. What Iexperience of owning and working with animals, was being responsible for their care, health, and growth, and exhibiting them in a competitive environment is a tremendous character building process. Every week I would come in to the farm for approcimately 20 hours a week. In these hours, I did not only take care of the pig, but I also began training her. Everyday, I walked my pig into the showring of the Agriculture Department, and work with her. In the beginning it was rough because the pig did not listened to my commands, but of course, they are just beginners. I work extremely hard with Gertrude because I wanted to make sure that she was successful in the show competition. Gertrude was a good pig, she began to follow the instructions I would command, and it was healthy. I took Gertrude to the Orange County Fair where I spent almost 2 weeks caring for my pig for the last time. I comepeted in the novice showmanship level at the OC fair, and I ended up getting 9th place overall. It was a great accomplishment. My project ended at the OC Fair that summer of 2012.
